Let’s throw some names out there. How about Bill Clinton, Mark Sanford, Eliot Spitzer and John Edwards? What do all of these fine people have in common?
Sadly, most people recognize these names because they not only committed adultery, but also that all of these men tried, at one time or another, to cover up an affair or extra-marital activities. The folks in the media also enjoyed the fact that each was in the spotlight for their political persuasion.
Former Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford wasn’t much better at covering his tracks. In June of 2009, Sanford disappeared off the face of the earth for six days and later told people that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. In fact during this famous “disappearance” he failed to answer calls from his own political post as well as failed to check in with his family on Father’s Day. However, a reporter by the name of Gina Smith caught Sanford coming off of a flight inbound from Argentina with his mistress. Talk about a bad liar. Sanford later admitted to “crossing the line” several times during his marriage as well as admitting to the affair. A year later he and his wife were divorced.
Eliot Spitzer had all the makings of a great crusader. Spitzer made a name for himself fighting organized crime (the mob) in New York. He parlayed this success into the office of Attorney General for New York and later became Governor. This married New York Governor was brought down by Federal Agents who had him under surveillance for some time. Originally though, the reason for the surveillance had to do with illicit bank transactions and not the fact that he was engaging prostitutes. According to reports, Spitzer spent more than $80,000 on prostitutes and the controversy ultimately forced him to resign public office under threat of impeachment.
Last but certainly not least is John Edwards, a man who appeared to be incredibly devoted to his wife of more than 30 years, who was battling breast cancer at the time of his political campaign. In 2007, articles started popping up about Edwards’ alleged affair with a woman who had worked in his campaign. To add insult to injury, he fathered a child with the woman.
After being followed to the Beverly Hills Hotel to visit the woman and the child, the evidence was simply indisputable. In 2010, Edwards admitted to the affair as well as the fact that he fathered the child. His wife eventually left him, and Edwards was accused of siphoning campaign funds to pay off the mistress.
Who could have foreseen the debacle that surrounded the 42nd President of the United States and Monica Lewinsky’s famous dress, putting President Clinton on the “Mount Rushmore” of political cheating spouses? Clinton was brought down by a woman who took it upon herself to be an investigator, Linda Tripp. You see, Lewinsky had confided in Tripp about her affair with Clinton and Linda began to record their conversations. After Tripp convinced her not to dry clean her now famous blue dress, it became irrefutable evidence. Somehow though, the Clintons managed to say married, so this one was cheating spouse that managed to keep things together.
